Helen Gordon Cameron, a resident of Charlotte since 2002, died on June 8, 2026, at the age of 93. She was born on December 1, 1932, in London, England, and was the daughter of the late Gordon Mackie and the late Kay Hardy.
Extremely proud of her English heritage, Helen served as a “Wren” in the Women’s Royal Naval Service, a branch of the U.K.’s Royal Navy, which is also where she met her future husband, Thomas Guthrie Cameron. The couple immigrated to Canada and then the U.S., where they raised their four children instilling in them a sense of adventure and a love of nature.
Helen was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother with a passion for gardening. She spent many hours planting, pruning and coaxing masses of blooms from her many flowering shrubs and climbing roses. Her innate creativity was evident through the years from her talents in knitting, sewing and embroidery to her skills at painting and drawing. An adventurer at heart, she loved a hot-air balloon ride and even went ziplining at Charlotte’s Whitewater Center for her 80th birthday. Undaunted by any challenge, she was always willing to “give it a go.” But perhaps most of all, she will be remembered for her infinite love of all animals, especially her beloved golden retriever Ben, and was known for adopting older dogs and caring for them in their later years.
Helen was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Guthrie Cameron, in 2000, and is survived by her four children: sons Alan of Waterford, ME, and Hugh of Concord, NC, and daughters Jane of Davidson, NC, and Catriona of Bennington, VT, plus grandchildren Andrew, Kelsey, Carolyn and Hannah. She is also survived by her sisters, Sue Hogan and Jenny Beacham.
Her bright light, adventurous spirit and ever-cheerful disposition will be greatly missed.
At Helen’s request, a memorial service will be held at a later date.
