Janet L. Smith, age 82, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at her residence, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Mrs. Smith was born at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina on January 23, 1944, a daughter of the late Thomas and Helen Hall. Raised in Pennsylvania during her early childhood, she relocated with her family to California in 1955. She was a longtime resident of Ventura, California, where she dedicated over 25 years of service as a secretary with the Ventura County Assessor’s Office. In February 2026, she moved to Charlotte, North Carolina with her two daughters.
Janet’s greatest joy was spending time with her family and her dogs. She enjoyed traveling with her parents, visiting her son and his family in New Zealand, took great pride in attending her granddaughters' cheerleading competitions, and was a passionate supporter of the Los Angeles Dodgers. An avid reader of mysteries, she also enjoyed collecting bells and nutcrackers, solving puzzle books, and watching Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and Hallmark Christmas movies.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Hall, Jr., and a nephew, Gary Newcomb.
She is survived by her three children, Shani Groom, Lori Rivas, and Erick Mabbutt and his wife, Zoe; seven grandchildren, Evan, Ashlynn, Alicia, Christina, Eden, Jade, and Taine; and one great-grandchild, Atlas. She also leaves behind her sister, Debbie Newcomb and her husband, Len, as well as a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
A Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 3175 Telegraph Road, Ventura, California.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the American Cancer Society.
