Jerry Lynn Smith of Harrisburg, NC took his last breath and slipped quietly passed the veil into the beginning of the next phase of his existence on April 5, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph E. Smith and Daisy L. Feagin Smith as well as his sister Miriam Simms all from Charlotte, NC
Jerry was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at the age of 10 and has since been a dedicated member for many decades. His service oriented heart extended to his family, to the church and into the community. He accepted numerous religious callings throughout his life, serving faithfully in many positions, including a Missionary in the Southern California Mission, Branch President, Priesthood Quorum Leader, Stake Farm Coordinator and as Scout Master. Second, only to his family, Scouting was his true calling; he served as a devoted Scout Master who poured his heart into his scouts and into the program. He relished the time he spent teaching, guiding, hiking, and camping in the great outdoors. From Kentucky to North Carolina to Florida, he dedicated countless weeks away from his wife and home to attend numerous summer encampments with his troop.
Jerry was deeply committed to serving others, especially those who faced challenges and needed additional assistance . His compassion and dedication were evident throughout his life. He could be found in hurricane-stricken areas, even as recently as 2024 in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, assisting others. He would utilize his knowledge of falling trees to help clear and restore the homes for those in need. Even within his business, Smith Plumbing and Bathroom Remodeling, he loved accepting jobs based on need rather than payment, often remodeling bathrooms for people facing financial hardship. He enjoyed seeing their reactions to the completed work, knowing it improved their lives.
Jerry was married for all time and eternity on February 24, 1967, in the Salt Lake City Temple, in Salt Lake City Utah, to his wife of 59 years, Norma Gail Eudy Smith. They traveled across the country so they could be married within the walls of the House of the Lord.
Shortly after their marriage, Jerry and Gail began building their family, which became the foundation of their enduring legacy. They were blessed with three children: Gregory Todd Smith, married to Jessica L. Smith, residing in Haslet, Texas; Jeffery Lane Smith, married to Tammy Smith, of Harrisburg, North Carolina; and Amanda Lynn Smith Henrie, married to Phillip Henrie of Concord, North Carolina.
Their family continued to grow, welcoming thirteen grandchildren: Tori Smith, Ali Smith, Zachery Bitz, Zachary Smith, Sydney Demotte, Dallin Henrie, Phoebe Henrie, Bella Smith, Tilly Henrie, Joven Smith, Daisy Henrie, Elijah Smith, and Colt Henrie. Their legacy extended even further with the arrival of five great-grandchildren, Shayna Bell, Derek Thomas, Shylah Bell, Eleanor Hasty, and Sofia Smith. Jerry is survived by siblings Don Smith and Karen Shue.
Jerry had no shortness of great qualities. He was a loving and devoted husband and father, who absolutely adored his grand and great grandchildren. He was always with the grandkids holding, teaching, helping, or doting over them. He had an extremely high work ethic which was evident in his professional life, as well in his personal life. He lived by the mantra of “do it right the first time.” He was humble, determined, loving and compassionate. He was a protector of his family, a teacher to the young, and a testament of truth. He was devoted to God and had the knowledge that because of our Savior’s ultimate sacrifice, that he would live still and be reunited with his family again.
Jerry will be remembered in a Celebration of Life service on April, 25th 2026 at the Charlotte Central Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 2500 Rocky River Road, Charlotte, at 4pm. Dinner and remembrances will follow.
