Hoy no solamente despedimos a Tony.

In Memory of José Antonio Pérez Murillo
“Tony Pérez”
October 20, 1951 – August 29, 2026
Today, we gather to remember and honor the life of a very special man: José Antonio Pérez Murillo, whom we all lovingly knew as Tony. Tony was born in Caracas, Venezuela, on October 20, 1951, to José Antonio Pérez Labieri and Alicia Estela Murillo de Pérez. He was the brother of Eduardo Alí Pérez Murillo, David Fernández Pérez Murillo, and María Carolina Pérez Murillo, and the father of two daughters, Jennifer Carolina Pérez Torres and Vanessa Alejandra Pérez Torres. From a very young age, Tony had two great passions that would remain with him throughout his life: music and animals, especially dogs. He completed his elementary education at Colegio Fray Luis Amigo and later continued his education at the Instituto de Formación Teacher on Avenida Rómulo Gallegos. He subsequently completed his military service at the Naval Training Center “Capitán de Navío Felipe Santiago Esteves,” known as CANES, in Catia La Mar. It was during that stage of his life that he met Gloria, who years later would become his wife. But at that time, life took them in different directions. Circumstances led Tony and Gloria to separate, and each continued on a different path. However, as often happens, God had other plans.
Music always held a very special place in Tony's heart. During the 1980s, he traveled to Aruba with a great dream: to establish himself as a professional musician, perform with other artists, and grow in the field he loved so much. And, with God's help, I have accomplished that dream. Throughout his musical career, he had the opportunity to share the stage with well-known artists and groups, including Trino Mora, Carlos Moreán, María Rivas, Nancy Ramos, Delia, Mirla Castellanos, and the renowned Brazilian artist Tania María. He was also part of various musical groups and projects, including international performances in Aruba. But for Tony, music was not simply a profession. It was part of who he was.
Since childhood, he has been surrounded by music. His father played the harp, and Tony also learned to play it. His brother Eddie played the cuatro, and together they developed their love for music. Over time, the drums became Tony's greatest passion. During their teenage years, Tony and Eddie even formed a small musical group. Tony played the drums and Eddie played the guitar. They would spend hours making music, sometimes secretly from their parents, who worried that they were spending too much time on music and not enough time on their studies. As brothers, they also shared mischief, arguments, and many adventures. But, as it happens between brothers who love each other deeply, their differences were never greater than the love that united them. As the years passed, life took each of them along different paths. Moving, work, and circumstances meant that they could not always be together. But distance never erased the bond between them. Even when they were far apart, Tony and Eddie always expressed how much they loved and missed each other. Especially during the last few years, Tony often told Eddie how much he missed him. And today, Eddie holds on especially to the most beautiful memories: their shared childhood, the music, the mischief, the conversations, and the love between two brothers.
Another very important chapter in Tony's life was his relationship with God. After returning from Aruba to Venezuela, I came home filled with experiences, dreams, and a desire to know God more deeply. A friend and neighbor invited him to church, and Tony accepted the invitation. That very Sunday, he arrived at Iglesia Jesús Es Amor in Caracas. They needed a drummer to join the Worship Ministry. And we can say that this was where God wanted Tony to be. Tony loved serving through music. He became increasingly involved in the church, studied the Bible, and grew in his faith. In 1993, he was baptized by Pastor José Gehez Encina and continued developing an increasingly deeper relationship with God.
Years later, social media made possible something that may once have seemed impossible: Tony and Gloria found each other again. They began talking once more, and even before they were able to reunite in person, Tony shared with Gloria something that had become fundamental in his life: his love for God. After reconnecting, Gloria traveled to see him. Although the distance was not always easy, they both made the effort to remain close. Later, Gloria traveled to the United States to visit her family. Tony decided to follow her, and approximately one year later, he also arrived in this country.
Here, they were finally able to begin a new chapter together. They were married in a civil ceremony and also in church, building a home surrounded by the support and affection of family and friends. Tony and Gloria lived a peaceful and organized life. Both were blessed with their work at Premier-Universal, where Gloria continues to work, and they always remained deeply grateful to God and to those who supported them.
Toward the end of 2023, Tony began experiencing some symptoms. After visiting the doctor and undergoing several tests, they discovered that he had colon cancer. In April 2024, he underwent surgery and subsequently began a long course of chemotherapy treatment. It was a difficult journey. There were moments when it seemed that he was finally reaching the end of that battle, but the symptoms returned. Once again, he had to face hospitalizations and further testing, until doctors discovered that the cancer had spread and produced multiple metastases. Tony fought throughout this entire process, surrounded by the love of Gloria, his family, and all those who cared for him.
Finally, on Saturday, August 29, 2026, Tony went home to the arms of Jesus.
His passing leaves a deep emptiness in the hearts of his beloved Gloria, his daughters, his brothers, his entire family, and his friends. But it also leaves something that death cannot take away: memories.
Carola, his sister, remembers Tony as a wonderful man, full of light, goodness, sincerity, and love. She especially remembers when, on her fifteenth birthday, Tony surprised her by bringing a serenade to the window of her bedroom. She also remembers their adventures in Puerto La Cruz, including the rally they participated in together, where they managed to finish in third place. She remembers how Tony would drive her to school with the music playing loudly, proudly announcing his sister's arrival. It is these small details that today become great treasures.
Tony had a special way of making the people around him feel loved. His words, his affection, and his love for his family left deep impressions on those whose lives he touched. He also had a special love for dogs and animals, something that reflected another part of the kindness he carried in his heart. Today, we are not only saying goodbye to Tony. We are celebrating his life.
We celebrate the man who loved music. The man who loved his family. The man who loved Gloria. The brother who shared games, music, mischief, and dreams. The man who found a new direction for his life through God. And although today we feel sadness because of his absence, we can hold on to the hope that Tony found through his faith. Because for those who believe in Christ, death does not have the final word.
Today, we say goodbye to his physical presence, but his memory will remain with us. It will remain in the songs he played. In the stories we shared. In the smiles he brought to our faces. In the love he gave. And in the heart of every person who had the blessing of knowing him.
Tony, thank you for your life. Thank you for the memories. Thank you for the love you left with your family and friends.
Today, we leave you to rest in God's hands, trusting that He has welcomed you into His presence. May God strengthen Gloria, your daughters, your brothers, and your entire family during this time of grief.
And may we, whenever we think of you, do so not only with tears, but also with gratitude for all the years God allowed us to share with you.
Until we meet again, Tony. May you rest in the arms of Jesus. You will forever remain in our hearts.
