Lonnie Arthur Hughey

Lonnie Arthur Hughey, Sr., 76, passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 12, 2026, in Concord, North Carolina. He was born on February 8, 1950, in Asheville, North Carolina.

Lonnie grew up in Altavista, Virginia, where he became known as a standout high school basketball player. His love for sports continued throughout his life, not only as a player but as a devoted coach and mentor. For many years, he served as a recreation basketball, soccer, and baseball coach, investing countless hours into the lives of young athletes in his community. His steady encouragement, patience, and belief in every child he coached left a lasting mark on generations of area youth.

Beyond the sidelines, Lonnie had a creative spirit and was a very capable artist who enjoyed drawing and working with his hands. He especially loved building detailed model cars, combining his artistic talent with his passion for automobiles. He was also an avid golfer who cherished time spent on the course with friends, and a lifelong car enthusiast.

Lonnie was preceded in death by his parents, Gene Hughey and Atrice Cranfill Hughey, and by his sister, Susan Hughey Jones.

He is survived by his son, Lon Hughey, Jr. and wife Heather of Locust, NC, and their daughter Samantha; and his daughter, Teresa Porter and husband Brian of Mooresville, NC, and their children Elijah, Lennon, and Lilikoi. He is also survived by his former wife, Betty Hughey of Concord, NC, who lovingly cared for him during his illness; his sister, Janice Barnett and husband Ed of Charlotte, NC; and his brother, Gary Hughey and wife Judy of Taylors, SC; along with many extended family members and dear friends.

A service to celebrate Lonnie’s life will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Parkwood Baptist Church, 1069 Central Drive NW, Concord, NC 28027, with visitation to follow.
