Mary "Irene" Geiger, 82, of Concord, NC passed away on March 27, 2021.
Irene was born in Brooklyn, NY to the late Eugene and Gertrude Griemsmann.
Along with her parents Irene is preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Geiger and son Robert J. Geiger, Jr.
She is survived by her children Thomas Geiger (Raleigh), Jackie Edwards (Dan) of Concord, Doreen Filosa (Rob) of Apex, grandchildren Matthew and Gregory Geiger, Abbey and Jake Edwards, and Brent Filosa.
Although she was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Irene moved her family out to âthe islandâ (Long Island). She raised her family in Brentwood, NY. In 1992, Irene and Robert semi-retired to Wilmington, NC and in 1999 moved to Concord, NC. Irene retired as a dispatcher with General Electric. She became known as the âCafeteria Ladyâ while working at an elementary school in Wilmington, NC as well as Rocky River Elementary School, Concord NC. Irene loved this job because she loved kids and food, so it was a win-win! She retired at the age of 74! Ireneâs greatest job/accomplishment was her family. She had a passion for cooking large meals to share with family and friends. She loved to socialize over home cooked meals.
Irene was a member of St. James the Greater Catholic Church and belonged to the Womanâs Guild @ St. James Catholic Church until her Alzheimerâs progression. Four years ago Irene entered Five Oaks Manor due to her Alzheimerâs. Many of the residents and staff at Five Oaks quickly became part of her family. Our family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the staff at Five Oaks Manor. Your love for mom made it home for her, and we will be forever grateful for that.
A funeral mass will be held on April 7th at 9:30 am at St. James the Greater Catholic Church, 139 Manor Ave, SW, Concord, NC. All are welcome, mask are required. The family will also have a private graveside service at Salisbury National Cemetery following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to help fight Alzheimers (www.alz.org).
