Priscilla Starker

Feb 6, 1943 — Sep 23, 2026

Concord, NC

Priscilla Glass Starker passed away on September 23, 2026, in Concord, North Carolina. She was born on February 6, 1943, in Winterville, Mississippi, to the late Moses Glass and Eugene Hawk Glass. Priscilla lived a life marked by warmth, energy, creativity, and care for others.

As part of the Great Migration, Priscilla’s family moved from Mississippi to Chicago during her youth. She graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1962. She married Charles “Ronnie” Vernon Starker in 1969 while he was serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. They lived briefly in Rochester, New York, before moving to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and later to Los Angeles, California. Eventually settling in San Diego, California, Priscilla worked in customer service leadership while continuing her education. In 1996, she graduated from Southwestern College with an Associate Degree in Business Administration.

Music was an important part of Priscilla’s life. For more than 20 years, she was a member of the baritone section of the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir of San Diego. With the choir, she performed around the world, including in Germany, Prague, Washington, D.C., and China, as well as at Carnegie Hall. The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir of San Diego performed primarily traditional and contemporary gospel music. The choir’s mission was to raise funds for college-bound high school seniors from the San Diego area who planned to major in the visual or performing arts.

Priscilla also had a deep love for God and plants and an impressive green thumb, with a gift for bringing even struggling plants back to life. Just as naturally as she nurtured her plants, Priscilla cared for people as Jesus taught her to do. She accepted Christ at a young age and was active in church throughout her life. In San Diego, she was a member of Visions of God Christian Fellowship and later New Seasons Church, where she was a Mother of the Church, served weekly at the church food bank, and attended Bible study. She joined The Park Church when she moved to Charlotte in 2021.

Priscilla loved taking care of everyone around her, including seniors older than she was. Her kindness was active and generous, expressed through everyday acts that made others feel remembered and loved. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels and other programs that served seniors.

Priscilla was vibrant and bubbly, strong-willed and thoughtful, curious and fun. A true life of the party, she loved to dance, paint, bowl, sing, and watch football and track and field, sharing her joy openly with those around her. She loved to spend time watching her grandchildren compete in sports and perform on stages.

Along with her parents, Priscilla was preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Ronnie” Vernon Starker; her brother-in-law, Edgar “Tuffy” Smith; and her brothers, Robespierre Chambers and Christopher A. Chambers.

Priscilla’s memory will be cherished by her son, Vernon Jamaul Starker; daughter, Tehia Starker Glass; and son-in-law, Taurus Glass. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Christopher, Siri, Desmond, and Miles. She is further survived by her brothers-in-law, Manley (Brandi) Smith and Frederick (Brenda) Smith; her sister-in-law, Karen Smith; her sisters, Diane Chambers and Joanne Chambers; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. She will also be missed by her best friend, Gwen Allen who she talked to every day, multiple times a day.

She will be remembered with love by all who knew her for her generous heart, lively spirit, and the many ways she cared for others.

Priscilla’s life was one of praise to God, compassion, and strength. Her love, her laughter, and the brightness she brought into the lives of others will remain a lasting gift.

Burial will be held Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at United Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Reddick, Florida.
