Stephen W. Buckley (November 24, 1968 – January 15, 2026) lived a life as vibrant, multifaceted, and deeply compassionate as the Grateful Dead concerts he adored, or the laid-back island rhythms of Jimmy Buffett that fueled his love for music, family, and close friends.

Born in Norwalk, Connecticut to Neil and Beverly (Waite) Buckley, Steve entered the world with an innate drive and a desire to help others that would shape his life’s work. From an early age, he displayed an entrepreneurial spirit that opened many doors. He channeled his love for the outdoors into owning and operating a landscape and lawn maintenance company, transforming ordinary yards into thriving green spaces with the same hands-on care he brought to everything he did.

He later built his own construction business, working as a general contractor who took great pride in doing much of the work himself. Known for his care and attention to detail, Steve helped bring others’ visions to life, always holding himself to a high standard and standing behind the quality of his work.

Later in life, Steve discovered what many would consider his true calling. In 2013, with characteristic determination, he completed his college degree and became a registered nurse, graduating with honors. He went on to complete a rigorous nurse residency at Yale University Hospital in Connecticut, where his abilities quickly became evident. Steve’s compassionate nature eventually led him to psychiatric and behavioral health nursing—a challenging field where his calm presence, sharp mind, and genuine care for others made a lasting impact. He specialized in caring for those facing mental health challenges and earned several nursing awards along the way. Colleagues and patients alike remember him as compassionate, highly organized, and deeply dedicated.

Steve’s spirit was infectious and full of life. A devoted fan of the Grateful Dead and Jimmy Buffett, he followed live music with friends, turning concerts into lasting memories filled with laughter and connection. He embraced adventure, whether scuba diving, skiing, traveling or seeking out great food. One of his simplest and most beloved traditions—enjoying clam dip and potato chips during the holidays—captured his ability to find joy in life’s small moments.

Above all, Steve’s heart belonged to his daughter, Emily. She was the center of his world, and he was a devoted father who showed up, cared deeply, and left her with a lasting legacy of love and encouragement.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Emily; his brothers, Rick Buckley, Neil Buckley Jr., and Colin Buckley; his sisters, Andrea Bennett, Nina Dunn, Beverly Schaer, Anne Izzi, Keira Morrell, and Moira McKenzie; and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, and extended family who will forever remember his kindness, intelligence, humor, and boundless energy.

A private memorial service and burial will take place at St. John Cemetery in Norwalk, Connecticut, honoring Steve’s preference for keeping things personal and low-key.
