William Powell Chitwood, affectionately known as Bill, was born on December 17, 1939, in Gastonia, NC, and went home to be with the Lord on February 19, 2026, in Concord, NC. His journey through life spanned a remarkable 86 years, during which he left a legacy of love, devotion, and impactful service to his community and family.

Bill dedicated over 44 years of his life to serving as an employee at Sears, where his work ethic and commitment were well acknowledged. His ability to connect with others extended beyond his professional life; he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Patsy "Pat" Chitwood. Their enduring partnership was a pillar of strength and comfort for both, showcasing a deep and abiding love.

A devoted father, Bill raised two sons, Chip Chitwood (Angela) and Chuck Chitwood (Dena), instilling in them values of kindness and hard work. Bill cherished each moment he spent with his grandchildren: Abigail Luna (Garrett), Chase Chitwood, Zachary Chitwood, Hallie Chitwood, Jonah Chitwood, and his great-grandchild, Elliott Luna. He brought joy and enthusiasm to their lives, often treating them to special lunches followed by trips to Toys R' Us.

Bill's personality was described as that of a gentle giant—laid back, loving, and devoted, he endeared himself to family and friends alike. He was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church since 2004.

His love for music was deeply ingrained in his life, having sung in the Charlotte Community Choir for an impressive 44 years. His yearly participation in Handel's Messiah and in various choir activities, including the Singing Christmas Tree and directing choirs in the Charlotte and Kannapolis areas, showcased his love for music and singing.

Bill’s adventurous spirit shone through in his hobbies, enjoying camping trips with his sons, thrilling whitewater rafting excursions, and skiing in Colorado. He also participated for many years in the MS150 bike ride to the beach with his sons, an activity that highlighted his zest for life and love for outdoor adventures.

Bill joins his parents, Luke Erastus Chitwood and Leo Powell Chitwood, in eternal rest, leaving behind a legacy enriched by the countless lives he touched and the enduring love of his family.

Bill's life was a testament to love, family, and faith—a life well-lived that will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know and love him.
